How To FIle Income Tax Online

Gather the Required Documents

Before you start filing your ITR online, gather the necessary documents such as PAN card, Aadhaar card, bank statements, Form 16, TDS certificates, and any other relevant financial documents.

Choose the Correct ITR Form

The different ITR forms available include ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7. Ensure you select the right form to avoid any complications later.

Access the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India, which is https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

Download the Appropriate ITR Utility

After logging in, download the relevant ITR utility (Excel or Java-based) and install it on your computer. The utility will assist you in filling out the ITR form accurately.

Fill in the ITR Form Offline

Open the downloaded ITR utility and fill in the required details offline. Ensure that you enter accurate information related to your income, deductions, and other relevant sections. Save the file periodically to avoid any data loss.

Generate XML File

Once you have filled in all the necessary details, click on the 'Generate XML' button within the ITR utility. This action will create an XML file that will be uploaded to the e-Filing portal in the subsequent steps.

Log in to the e-Filing Portal and Upload XML File

Return to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and log in using your credentials. Navigate to the 'e-File' section and select 'Income Tax Return' from the drop-down menu. Choose the appropriate assessment year, upload the generated XML file, and submit it.

Verify Your ITR

After successfully uploading the XML file, the next step is to verify your ITR. You can choose between two methods for verification: electronic verification code (EVC) or physical verification.

E-Verify ITR or Send ITR-V to CPC

If you opt for EVC, you can choose from various methods such as net banking, Aadhaar OTP, bank account OTP, or Demat account OTP to generate the EVC and verify your ITR instantly.

Confirmation and Completion

Once your ITR is successfully verified, you will receive an acknowledgment from the Income Tax Department via email. Retain the acknowledgment (ITR-V) for future reference.
