His work is an inspiration for students like us; who have loads to learn from people like him and get motivated to do well in the field that we choose to be part of, once college ends.

Young and versatile, he is into fashion, portraits, commercials, travel and last but not the least-ART! It’s truly mesmerizing that how a person can be so creative and be almost next to perfect in every genre.

I recently got a chance (finally), to have a one-o-one interaction with the man himself, who talked at length about his journey into photography and much more.

Here are the excerpts…

VB: For those who don’t know you, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
MS:
I am Mikhil Saluja from New Delhi, India. I am a bachelors in design (visual communication ) from New Delhi, and Masters degree in Photography (art & fashion) from Istituto Europeo Di Design, Italy. I
have been shooting for the last 5 years and also run a Graphic Design studio in Gurgaon.

VB: Did you always want to get into photography?
MS:
Not exactly! I started as a graphic designer and started with Art directing fashion shoots. Art direction led me to photography and then I decided to pursue photography.

VB:-How and when did you get your first paid assignment?
MS:
After I came back I started mailing, meeting magazines in Delhi. Then one of the magazines decided to try me out for a small portrait assignment and that is where it all started.

VB: You seem to be pretty versatile with your photography. You are into fashion, portraits, commercials, travel and art too, which domain or area do you find the most interesting and why?
MS:
I find portraits very challenging and interesting because there’s so much of character in faces and a lot can be depicted via them.

VB: What are the equipments that you use? I mean camera and the lense?
MS:
I really don’t care much about the cameras , equipments etc. However, I use Canon 5d with 24-70 mm lens for professional and a Sony for travel and personal shoots.

VB: The compositions in your photos are just out of the world? Do you spend a lot of time to plan your compositions or do you just go with the flow?
MS:
I try to frame and am ready with the set in my mind before I take the shot. I like to be a bit prepared before I get into a shoot; it always helps in bringing out the best of your work.

VB: Which project are you currently working on?
MS:
I am starting to get my hands on some small personal fashion films.

VB: According to you, what makes a photographer a great photographer?
MS:
I don’t know. I guess just do what you feel like. But the most important part is to see and study photographers of different genres, eras and from different society. That kind of gives a different exposure and makes you try new things.

VB: Whose work do you follow or get inspired from?
MS:
I like Peter Lindberg, Cindy Sherman, Erwin Olaf, Miles Aldrige, Steven Klein and many others.

VB: Out of all the work you have done so far which one has been your favorite and why?
MS:
I loved one of my initial shoots (the case closed ) shot for Grazia magazine. Reason being- there was a whole story written before we shot it. Plus I roamed around and scouted the locations, which was fun!

VB: What all brands or clients have you worked with?
MS: Magazines:
Grazia, Vogue, Cosmoploitan, Platform Magazine, Marie Claire and few more.
Ads: Da Milano, Swarovski, TLC

VB: Any tips or tricks for the young photographers who follow and love your work?
MS:
Just practice what you want to shoot. No need to shoot anything just for the heck of it. Keep experimenting and keep making mistakes.
